Martin has signed to play in China and is contract does not contain an out clause. He would miss the entire NBA season if he plays in China.

DENVER — The Denver Nuggets’ options could be limited if there’s an NBA season.

Three of their free agents have decided to play in China — Kenyon Martin became the third on Wednesday — and two starters are taking their games to Europe.

And while Ty Lawson and Danilo Gallinari can return if there indeed is a 2011-12 season, Martin won’t be able to leave his Chinese Basketball Association squad until the season ends in March.

J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler have also elected to play in China, which won’t allow NBA players to opt out of their one-year contracts should the lockout end.

Martin’s agent, Andy Miller, confirmed to The Associated Press the forward has agreed to a deal with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. He will join shooting guard Quincy Douby, a former first-round draft pick by the Sacramento Kings.

Martin’s signing was first reported by The Denver Post.

“He’s looking forward to the opportunity and global expansion of his image/game,” Miller wrote in an email. “He’s feeling great.”

Martin gave the Nuggets an inside toughness last season. But he’s been plagued by balky knees throughout his seven seasons in Denver.

The 33-year-old forward missed the first 26 games last season as he recovered from another knee operation. Martin finished strong, averaging 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds, and even took on some of the leadership responsibilities when Carmelo Anthony was traded to the New York Knicks.

Although it was by no means certain Martin would return to the Nuggets in 2011-12, this will definitely have the team on the lookout for an aggressive rebounder to fill his role.

Not only that, but perimeter shooters are needed to replace Smith and Chandler. Smith signed a one-year deal with a team in Zhejiang, the same province Chandler is heading to but not the same team.

Chandler already is in China and is quickly adjusting to his new surroundings.

On a recent Twitter post, Chandler wrote, “just walked/climbed about 4 or 5 miles on the great wall of china…”

Lawson is electing to play in Lithuania and can return if there’s a resolution to the labor strife. Same with Gallinari, who rejoined his former Italian team Olimpia Milano on Tuesday.

Gallinari played for Olimpia from 2005 to 2008 before being drafted sixth overall by the Knicks in 2008. The Knicks dealt him to the Nuggets in the blockbuster deal involving Anthony.

Camps had been expected to open Oct. 3 with the regular season beginning in early November. But that could be in jeopardy with the sides still bickering over the salary cap structure.

ROME (AP) – Kobe Bryant has been offered a $6.7 million, one-season contract to play for the Italian team Virtus Bologna, appealing to his childhood memories of growing up in the country.

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar spent part of his youth in Italy while his father played there. He speaks Italian, prompting Bologna to hope he might return if there’s an NBA lockout.

Virtus Bologna general manager Massimo Faraoni tells The Associated Press he’s been on conference calls between Bryant’s agent, Rob Pelinka, Bologna president Claudio Sabatini and main sponsor Canadian Solar, which would provide the cash for such a deal.

“I think the fact that he’s lived in Italy makes this appealing to him,” Faraoni said.

Virtus has given Bryant four different contract options, stretching from the one-year deal to two-month and one-month options, and a per-game deal that would come out to $739,640 per home game.

All of the offers are pretax and would allow Bryant to return to the Lakers immediately if the lockout ends.

Turkish club Besiktas and at least one team in China have expressed interest in the 33-year-old Bryant, who has won five NBA championships and been an All-Star 13 times.

Faraoni watched Bryant when he played in Pistoia’s youth system in the late 1980s.

“I saw him when he was a kid, and he already had a lot of passion for the game then,” Faraoni said.

Bryant’s father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, played in Italy with Rieti, Reggio Calabria, Pistoia and Reggiana from 1984-1991. The elder Bryant now coaches the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA.

Virtus also reached out to Manu Ginobili, who played with Bologna before joining the San Antonio Spurs in 2002. Denver Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari rejoined his former Italian club Olimpia Milano on Tuesday.

Other NBA players are committing to play in leagues outside the United States.

Nuggets free agents Wilson Chandler and J.R. Smith plan to play in China, Denver’s Ty Lawson will play in Lithuania and New Jersey Nets All-Star Deron Williams signed with Turkish club Besiktas.

Virtus has won 15 Italian league titles but none since 2001, when it also won the Euroleague for the second time.

Virtus has asked fans to send messages supporting the recruitment of Bryant to a “Bologna for Bryant” email address, which will be published on the team’s website.

Bologna opens the Italian league against Roma on Oct. 9. It did not qualify for this season’s Euroleague, although the team has big ambitions after signing former Clemson point guard Terrell McIntyre, who led Siena to four consecutive Italian titles before transferring to Malaga in Spain last season.

“I think we already have a competitive squad for Serie A, but Kobe is obviously a great champion and he would make a great addition to the team,” Faraoni said. “I would put us just behind Milano and Siena.”

The NBA season usually begins in late October but owners and players have failed to agree on a new labor deal. The two sides are at odds over how to divide the league’s revenue, a salary cap structure and the length of guaranteed contracts.

Athens • The BYU Cougars proved to be no match — in the second half, at least — for one of the top national basketball teams in the world on Thursday in the Acropolis of Athens tournament in Greece.

The Italian National Team, ranked No. 7 in the FIBA world rankings and playing with three NBA stars, walloped the Cougars 102-63 at the Olympic Center in Athens.

Brock Zylstra led BYU with 26 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

It was the final game for the Cougars on their trip to Greece. They went 2-2 but played without two potential starters and had just nine available players on the trip.

The Cougars trailed just 43-36 at halftime, thanks to some torrid 3-point shooting by Zylstra, but couldn’t overcome Italy’s huge size advantage in the second half.

Danilo Gallinari, of the Denver Nuggets, Andrea Bargnani, of the Toronto Raptors and Marco Belinelli, of the New Orleans Hornets, played for the Italian team.

The Italians opened the second half on a 34-9 run and cruised from there. They shot 70 percent from the field, while holding the Cougars to 43 percent.

On Tuesday BYU fell 83-54 to homestanding Greece, No. 4 in the FIBA world rankings.

The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) has passed new rules prohibiting teams from signing players under contract with NBA teams, as well as from including out-clauses in contracts allowing players to return to the U.S. once the lockout is over, according to reports out of China.

The CBA has put together a list of 108 free agents who are eligible to be signed by Chinese teams, Pro Basketball Talk notes. Still, those players cannot have out-clauses in their deals with CBA teams.

“We welcome free-agent players of the NBA to play at least a full season in the CBA,” Bai Xilin, director of the CBA League Office, said on Friday, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki are among the NBA stars who have said they’d consider move to China, but all three are under contract with their current teams. The new policy essentially bans them from signing deals with Chinese teams.

While Shanxi Zhongyu announced Thursday that Byrant would sign a contract with the team if he was allowed to play in the CBA without restrictions, Bai stressed that the new policy prevents him from playing for the team, according to Xinhua.

There has been some buzz, however, that there’s a sentiment among Chinese teams that the league will not be able to enforce the rule and that teams will move forward in their efforts to sign NBA stars despite the new rule.

The reason for the rule change: The government-run CBA believes that bringing NBA stars aboard on a temporary basis will detract from the league’s growth. Teams, however, see revenue-generating opportunities in signing these players and believe that doing so would add to the stature of Chinese basketball.

As the NBA lockout continues operating in a relative dead zone with no movement between players and the league, the inevitable look towards Europe and elsewhere is in full swing.

With Dwyane Wade reportedly looking at China and Deron Williams going to Turkey, players are clearly cognizant that a lost NBA season is a very real possibility. And like the NHL lockouts before it, going overseas gives guys a chance to play while collecting another income.

It’s worth noting however that the circumstances of superstars like the aforementioned two will differ greatly from a guy on the downswing or a tier-2 rank-and-file NBA player. Wade and Williams are far from being washed up like Steph Marbury, and this is only a temporary measure for the duration of the lockout.

Obviously, the biggest lure is the money. It’s a quick payday, not unlike a big-name comedian playing two nights in Coboconk, Ontario. The difference is, these international club teams are willing to throw crazy money with player-friendly out-clauses at these stars. While roundly denied by all, the Wade/China rumour was $2 million US a month. Williams could get $5 million for a maximum of 10 months in Istanbul. Before he shot down rumours of joining Williams with Turkish club Besiktas, reports said Kobe Bryant wanted $1 million a month — true or not, a figure he would certainly get.

Then as quickly as that rumour died, word comes that Kevin Durant is now in talks with the same club — with Ron Artest likely joining the Cheshire Jets in England.

While the fact exists that the European leagues have matured over the years, they are still a minor league in comparison to the NBA. Rumours have floated over the years about players waiting months to be paid — although you can bet a powerful agent would ensure this would not happen with an NBA superstar.

Most of the American and Canadian basketball players plying their trade in Europe every year aren’t superstars though.

“I never had any problem [being paid in Turkey]. You heard some of the stories, but I never had verification,” former Raptors coach Jay Triano said last week (people associated with the NBA discussing players going overseas is prohibited by the league given the lockout, and it should be prefaced that Triano, who is still with the Raptors organization, did not discuss with me anything about current players considering Europe or elsewhere, only his personal experience in the ’80s).

Triano did admit however he was “a little late getting some of our payments” when he played in Mexico for two years.

“It was one of the greatest things I did,” he said about playing in Europe, noting that as a guy who didn’t have a playing future in the NBA, it was instrumental in his development as a person, a player on Canada’s national team and later as a coach.

Yet aside from padding a superstar’s wallet or expanding a young man’s horizons, where does a non-star locked-out NBA player go these days?

‘Not a gimmick’

Andre Levingston, president of the upstart National Basketball League of Canada, hopes for some it will be north of the 49th parallel. Earlier this summer the NBL sent out a media release, suggesting locked-out NBAers consider one of soon-to-be seven Canadian franchises in places like Halifax and Quebec City.

“We’re realistic in our approach. It wasn’t a gimmick, we’re not getting LeBron James or Dirk Nowitzki,” Levingston told me last week. Canadian franchises in the NBL’s predecessor, the Premier Basketball League, already featured former NBA players like Erick Barkley and Kirk Snyder.

While Euro and Asian leagues signing superstars part-time is clearly as much a ticket-selling move as it is a basketball one, the presence of say for example, Leon Powe in Saint John, N.B., isn’t going to put a ton of butts in seats. But that’s not Levingston’s thinking here — it’s about giving locked out players a place to play while increasing the quality of play in the NBL.

“In terms of tier-3 players, this could be attractive to them,” said Levingston. “We want to give them an opportunity should they need a game.”

Levingston for one, figures any potential arrangement with an NBA player would be temporary, as he believes there will be some form of season. “I think they understand what they have to lose,” he said.

I’m not so sure Billy Hunter agrees with him.

Playground antics

If you already didn’t have enough evidence that Michael Beasley has a screw loose, revisit his “Heisman” on a fan last week in a playground game at Dyckman Park in Manhattan’s Washington Heights.

The clear difference between that and Matt Barnes punching another player the same day in a Pro-Am in California is the fact Barnes’ victim was a player. Trash talk is part of sports. If I’m a defensive end for instance, when I line up opposite Michael Oher of the Baltimore Ravens, I’m going to tell him how bad a movie I thought The Blind Side was. Extra-curriculars may ensue, yes, but it’s on the field of play.

Heckling by fans though? On the New York streetball circuit? Is water wet? Suck it up, Beasley.

Ben Gordon will not be making his international debut for Great Britain this summer after all.

British Basketball on Monday confirmed that the Detroit Pistons guard won’t be a part of Chris Finch’s charges as they head for EuroBasket in Lithuania at the end of the month.

The 28-year-old guard decided to sit out because of complications regarding the NBA lockout and the proposed insurance coverage.

“We are obviously very disappointed that Ben is not able to join us this year but we fully understand and respect his decision,” said British Basketball Performance Director Chris Spice.

“This is a difficult and complex insurance issue caused primarily by the NBA lockout.

“We have done our best to provide a cover that is close to what we would have in a normal season, but in the end things didn’t work out from a financial or scope of cover perspective.”

This is the third year in a row that Gordon has missed out on making his international bow for his native country.

He sat out EuroBasket 2009 in Poland when, as a free agent, he left the Chicago Bulls to join the Detroit Pistons and spent that summer getting acclimated to his new team.

Last year, he was ruled out Great Britain’s EuroBasket qualifying campaign through injury.

“We have built the reputation of our programme to such a level that where the players are concerned, all the professional clubs know that their players are well provided for when they are with the British squad,” Spice added. “Unfortunately for both Ben and ourselves we are unable to connect again this year. It will be doubly important that next year we have everything in place for Ben to join us on day one of the programme as every day he is with us will be key to performing at our peak for London 2012.”
